Short description of the varieties

“Karlovo” variety

“Karlovo” variety was created by Vasil Staykov and Blagovesta Chingova through an individual selection from a local population. It was recognised in 1967.

The variety forms tall, large, rounded, highly productive plants. The leaves are larger, grey-green and in the dormancy period become silver grey. It produces 618 peduncles per plant on average, with a cylindrical, not very compact spike, with an average length of 8 cm with six whorls with on average of 12 flowers per whorl. The corolla and the calyx are coloured dark purple. “Karlovo” variety is characterised by later and slower blooming. The average productivity of the variety is 690 kg/daa of flowers, 1.18% essential oil or 7.8 kg/daa with 25-30% linalyl acetate and good quality. Suitable for harvesting of dry flowers.

“Hemus” variety

“Hemus” variety was created by the authors Vasil Staykov, Blagovesta Chingova, Hristo Chorbadzhiyski and Penka Kenderova in 1973, using the method of individual selection and clonal selection.

The variety has rounded, compact plants. The leaves are fresh green of colour. It produces 450-500 erect peduncles, with strong, not that long stalks – 15 cm on average. The spike is compact, cylindrical, in fascicles. The corolla is light violet blue and the calyx is dark violet. At the age of normal flowering, an average of 560 kg of flowers are harvested per decare. The essential oil content is 1.76% on average, or up to 10 kg of essential oil with 30-35% linalyl acetate harvested per decare. The variety is very suitable for mechanised farming and harvesting.

“Drujba” variety

“Drujba” variety was created by the authors Blagovesta Chingova, Vasil Staykov, Lyudmila Romanenko and Penka Kenderova in 1982, via intervarietal hybridisation (clone No. 59-0 x variety “Stepnaya”) combined with a selection in the first seed generation.

The plants form strong, wide, rounded tufts.

The leaves are linear-lanceolate, fresh green, long and narrow. The peduncles are erect to inclined with strong stalks, with average length of 25 cm. The spike is cylindrical, with 6 whorls on average. The plants produce 500 peduncles on average. The growth of additional peduncles is also typical. The corolla is light to pale violet-blue, and the base of the calyx is grey-green. “Drujba” variety is with relative period of flowering. The average productivity is 637 kg/daa of flowers, 1.67% essential oil or 10.7 kg/daa with 30-35% linalyl acetate and very good quality. Due to its stronger growth, the “Drujba” variety is more sensitive to drought and unfavourable conditions.

The plants are erect, compact, with a hemispherical shape. The peduncles are 500 per plant on average, and are 22 cm long. The old leaves are dark green with a smooth surface and slightly curled downwards. The colouring of the corolla is light purple, and of the calyx – pale purple towards the corolla to light green towards the base. It is a high-yielding variety, with an average yield of 670 kg/daa with essential oil content of 2.58% or 17.2 kg/daa.

“Teres” variety

“Teres” variety was created in the Institute of Roses, Essential and Medical Cultures (IREMC) – Kazanlak, by Stanko Stanev via an individual selection in F1-seed population obtained at open pollination of the “Sevtopolis” variety. It belongs to the type of true, narrow-leaved, lavender – D.C. The variety was created in the period 2004-2019. It was recognised by the State Variety Commission in 2020. During the period of full flowering the plants are rounded, erect, with a compact habitus. The tufts reach an average height of 70 cm and a width of 115 cm towards the between rows. The inflorescences are upright with an average length of 22 cm. The length of the spike is 5-6 cm, with 5 whorls and 12-14 calyx in a whorl. The number of peduncles is 550-600 on average.
